The saying with the chain and the weakest link is applicable on drinks too. Always try to work with top ingredients. If that lime is turning gray - throw it away and use a fresh lime instead. And don't be afraid to let your stash of drink ingredients decide what drinks to make. You'll get far with just some lemons, a bottle of your favorite base spirits, and a nice filler.

Ingredient types

	Base spirits. The base of any drink, except for some liqueur drinks and those without alcohol, is a base spirit. For example, you'll find vodka, gin, rum, tequila, and brandy in this category.
	Flavoring agents. When making a drink, your base spirits often can need another push In the flavor department. This is where the flavoring agents come in. Often, you'll use a liqueur for this. (Yes, a fruit and/or a herb, or even a soft drink can be the flavor, too.)
	Fillers. Nearly all drinks have a filler of some kind - juice, soft drink, milk, and so forth. The cranberry juice in the Cosmopolitan, for instance, is a filler. Or the ginger beer in a Dark and Stormy.
	Garnishes. Just in the world of cooking, garnish can make all the difference. This is why nearly all drink recipes here have a garnish suggestion - that, and the fact that with a lime wedge or lemon wedge, the guest can adjust the acid in the drink.
