At the recently held IBA congress and World Cup final in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, the world saw a new champion as the 31-year-old Estonian barmaid Krista Meri reached the top place and became the 3rd female winner in World Cup history.
Krista who works at Olympic Casino in Tallinn qualified to world cup final by winning the Estonian championships in 2007 and in Taiwan she had to fight against 50 other national champions from all over the world, first in a preliminary round then the semi final with the twelve best and finally against the top six bartenders in the final. The score was added and Krista was in the top position after all rounds
The category this year was Pre- dinner cocktails and the rules said Max five ingredients, max seven cl of Alcohol and not more than two cl of sweet products (hence it is a pre –dinner style) Her cocktail is called Golden Autumn and her intention was to make a green cocktail with an apple flavour. The cocktail was very stylish, with a minimalist garnish compared to many of the other entries; it was achieved through very many tryouts according to her self.
Golden Autumn 2 cl Vodka 2 cl Extra Dry Vermouth 1 bar spoon Amaretto 2 bar spoons lime cordial 1 cl Monin Pomme Verte (green apple syrup) Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktailglass. Garnish with apple cinnamon and blueberry sprigs,
Second place came Mr Fabio Bacchi from Italy and the bronze medal also went another Baltic representative: Mr Andrei Norekis of Latvia.
This was not her first competition; she’s been competing in local Estonian competitions and once in Latvia’s capital Riga. Her thoughts of the world cup is of course that she has positive memories about the competitions, everything was well organised and left very professional look to say nothing about the reception she got when she retuned to Tallinn airport with her trophy. A lot of friends’ colleagues and journalists came to greet the first Estonian cocktail world champion ever.
